Physical Education
At St Mary's School each class has two lessons of curriculum PE per week, in line with government requirements. We follow a scheme called Get Set 4PE, which provides engaging and fun lessons, covering the whole of the PE curriculum. Every half term the focus sports of the term change, enabling us to cover 12 different sports or skill sets across the year. This rotation of sports ensures that we cover all of the objectives within the national curriculum. PE can be taught by the class teacher, PE lead or by external coaches. Several units of PE per year are taught by qualified specialist coaches. Swimming is taught at Parish Wharf Swimming Pool in Key Stage Two. In addition to curriculum PE, we are part of the Daily Mile initiative. Where possible, each class runs a mile (or runs for a period of time) every day. This ensures that we are providing more and better quality opportunities for our children to be active and healthy every day.
Every term we provide at least one free lunchtime club. This will vary from term to term. The children are also provided with the opportunity to initiate their own activities during our active lunchtimes. Our before and after school sports clubs are provided by Premier Sport. They provide a rotation of activities that change regularly and are chosen by pupil request. We also have a dance club that is provided by an external provider.
We take part in many inter-school competitions against other schools in North Somerset. These include: football, netball, tennis, golf, cross-country running and The North Somerset Dance Festival, among others. In Key Stage One we take part in annual sports festivals and celebrations.
