At St Mary’s we have a mixed Year 5 and 6 class. We aim to create an enjoyable learning environment where each child can acquire knowledge, skills and practical abilities through a variety of topics. Our curriculum is carefully planned as a whole school to ensure continuity and progression for all. The children are regularly taken on journeys to new worlds through the books we read, covering a wide range of genres and cultures.
In Priory Class, we understand that all children learn at different paces and in different ways. Lessons and resources are chosen carefully to support all children to become independent learners. We celebrate marvellous mistakes and are courageous in asking for help when we need it. Our learning and class-based discussions are linked to our four school values: courage, curiosity, community and compassion – values we aim for all children to leave our school with a good understanding of. Additionally, St Mary’s School is linked to the nearby Church and we attend regular worship and whole school celebrations there.
In our class, we enjoy working as a team and learn to share, take turns, help each other and always use kind words. We feel it is very important that the children feel happy and safe in the classroom. We discuss how we can all work together to understand what makes a 'good listener' and how we can look after ourselves, our classroom and each other.
Term 1:
This term, we have covered my favourite poem and now possibly the children's: The Highwayman. This poem is rich in exciting vocabulary and inspired the children to write their own poems in a similar style. The children really captured the drama and the tension by having an eerie forest night-time setting. They enjoyed the ending of the HWM poem so made sure theirs was equally as drastic. We all had fun writing and reading these.
In addition, we read a very moving picture book: The Promise by Nicola Davies. We learnt that the actions of one person can indeed change the future of the world. We compared the world she lived at the beginning of the book - mean and hard and ugly to the world at the end of the book - bright, vibrant and hopeful. The children rewrote this narrative whilst practising semi-colons and speech punctuation.
In History we learnt about Trade in Bristol during the Tudor times. This also covered the slave trade and the children were shocked to discover that this is part of British history and a big part of Bristol's history. We learnt about figures like Edward Colston and how he is very controversial. We learnt about how the Industrial Revolution made way for different products to be traded due to new factories with machinery and how because of this the slave trade in Bristol became less prominent and then eventually abolished in Great Britain.
Year 6 went to a Lifeskills event in Bristol for an afternoon. They learnt all sorts of skills that could help them in the future. They learnt how to dress appropriately at night time so that they remained visible to others; they learnt how to call the emergency services and what information they should give; and they learnt what to do in certain unwanted situations factoring in peer pressure. They had a really good experience.
